About This Author

I am a U.S. Navy Veteran who possesses a B.A. in English & History with a concentration in ESL. In addition, I possess a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education in English, ESL, & Social Studies from the University of Memphis, which has national certification & accreditation from NCATE. Furthermore, during my schooling, I successfully completed over 72 credit hours in Educational Psychology.

I taught for two school years in Memphis City Schools & tutored students in Math & Reading online for Educate Online, Inc., which does online tutoring for Catapult, Eclipse, Ivy West, & eSylvan. I am familiar with online teaching tools, including light pens, tablets, live audio interaction, IM, & Skype. I tutor students & provide homework assistance both online & in person.

When I tutor a student, the first thing I look for is defining what level the student is at. Next, I look at where the stakeholders involved like the student, parent(s), and teachers want the student to be. I give brief pen-and-paper tests to determine the student's level. Whether the student needs test preparation or tutoring in Math, Science, Social Studies, or English - Language Arts, the key to all of these is language. Students often need to improve their reading, interpretation skills & abilities in language.

All subjects have vocabulary that is unique to that subject. Just as music makes sense to those that have studied it, so math will make better sense when students improve their vocabulary in the language math. Grammar, Science & History also have vocabulary or language, that is all their own. Standardized tests have a language that is all their own with each test or type of test having its own dialect, so to speak. This is the path I lead the student down. This is what they & their parents are looking for; student success in school & in life. This is what I love to help parents & students with. This is what I spent almost ten years in college for, because I love it. This is teaching.

Parents entrust me with their children in English, where I teach the reading & writing process. We identify their strengths, & I teach them to use their strengths to compensate for & eventually overcome their weaknesses. In History, the biggest problem is not facts & dates or concepts & ideas; most often, history simply does not seem relevant to the life, experiences, & background of the children I am tutoring. I make it relevant by making History, Science, English, or Math come alive to my students. Once this happens, they find it easy & make steady improvement. This is teaching, & this is what I do.

I enjoy reading, writing, movies, & Rock 'n Roll (oldies-1980's). Specifically, I like Stephen King books & movies, Harry Potter novels & movies, the Percy Jackson novels, Star Trek, Star Wars, the Holocaust, biographies, and historical novels.
